Nicholas Roland, PhD, is a scholar of nineteenth- and twentieth-​century American history, with an emphasis on Texas and the Southwest. His first book, Violence in the Hill Country: The Texas Frontier in the Civil War Era, is forthcoming through the University of Texas Press.
